یک قهوه و یک لیوان آب، لطفاً.

From Lesson 11:Indefiniteness (yek)·Farsi

Questions & Answers about یک قهوه و یک لیوان آب، لطفاً.

Why do we use yek here for "a coffee" and "a glass"?
In this lesson, we use yek (which literally means "one") to mean "a" or "an". While Farsi often leaves words bare to talk about general concepts, using yek before the noun is the standard way to show you mean a specific single item, especially when ordering at a cafe.
There is no word for "of" in yek livān āb (a glass of water). Is that normal?
Yes! When you talk about a container and what is inside it, Farsi does not use a word for "of" or even the linking "e" sound (the Ezafe) that you normally use to connect nouns. You simply put the container (livān) directly before the liquid (āb).
How is the word for "and" (و) pronounced in this sentence when speaking naturally?
Although it is formally pronounced va, in everyday speech it is shortened to a simple "o" sound. Because the word before it (qahve) ends in a vowel, people will usually add a "y" sound to connect them smoothly, making it sound like qahve-yo yek.
What is the little double-dash symbol over the last letter of lotfan (please)?
That symbol is a pronunciation mark borrowed from Arabic. It tells you to pronounce the end of the word as "an". Because Farsi borrowed this polite word along with its spelling, the final letter is pronounced "an" rather than making a regular vowel sound.
