Saying "A" or "An" with یک
Farsi does not have specific words for "a" or "an". To talk about an unspecified single item, simply use the number one (یک) directly before the noun.
| one / a, an | یکyek |
| A tea, please. | یک چای، لطفاً.yek châi, lotfan. |
| Is this an apple? | آیا این یک سیب است؟âyâ in yek sib ast? |
Adding Adjectives
When describing the noun with an adjective, یک stays at the beginning of the phrase. The noun and adjective follow, linked by the ezafe vowel.
| A warm coffee, please. | یک قهوهی گرم، لطفاً.yek qahve-ye garm, lotfan. |
| A warm loaf of bread is on the table. | یک نان گرم روی میز است.yek nân garm ruye miz ast. |
Containers and Measurements
Use یک before a container or unit of measurement just like you would a standard noun. Notice how "a glass of water" translates literally to "one glass water" (یک لیوان آب), without a connecting word for "of".
| A coffee and a glass of water, please. | یک قهوه و یک لیوان آب، لطفاً.yek qahve va yek livân âb, lotfan. |
| A glass of cold water, please. | یک لیوان آب سرد، لطفاً.yek livâne âbe sard, lotfan. |
