Questions & Answers about آیا این مدادها جدید است؟
How is the word for pencils made plural in this sentence?
The regular plural marker -hâ is added directly to the end of the singular noun medâd (pencil) to make medâdhâ (pencils).
Why is the word in (this) used instead of a plural word for "these"?
In Farsi, when a pointing word like in (this) comes right before a noun, it always stays in its singular form, even if the noun itself is plural. So, "these pencils" is grammatically built as "this pencils" (in medâdhâ).
Why does the sentence end with the singular verb ast (is) instead of "are"?
This is a very important and common rule in Farsi! When a plural subject is inanimate (not human, like pencils, cars, or trees), the verb usually remains singular. So Farsi speakers literally say "these pencils is new".
Do I always need to use âyâ to ask a yes/no question?
Not always. âyâ is a somewhat formal question word that sits at the beginning of a sentence to signal that a yes/no question is coming. In everyday spoken Farsi, people usually drop it entirely and just say in medâdhâ jadid ast? with a rising tone of voice at the end.
