Why are the "to be" endings written as ام and ای here instead of just attaching to the end of the words?
Because engilisi (English) and rusi (Russian) both end in the vowel sound "ee". In Farsi, when a word ends in a vowel, we can't just stick the ending directly onto it. We use an "alef" (the letter ا) as a bridge to support the ending. So, "I am" becomes ام instead of just م, and "you are" becomes ای instead of just ی.
How do you pronounce روسیای? Are there two "ee" sounds in a row?
Yes! The word for Russian is rusi (ends in "ee"), and the ending for "you are" is -i (also an "ee"). You pronounce them both: "roo-see-ee". In natural spoken Farsi, you will usually hear a slight "y" sound bridging the gap, making it sound like "roo-see-yee".
How would I change this sentence to use the plural pronouns ("We" and "You all") from the current lesson?
You would swap out the pronouns and their matching endings. "We are English" is mâ engilisi-im (ما انگلیسیایم) and "You all are Russian" is shomâ rusi-id (شما روسیاید). Notice that we still use that same "alef" bridge (ا) before the plural endings -im and -id because the nationalities still end in a vowel!
Why does the ending in انگلیسیام look separated from the word, but doesn't have a full space?
That is done using a "half-space" when typing on a Farsi keyboard. It prevents the ending (ام) from physically connecting to the last letter of the base word (انگلیسی). This keeps the base word and its ending looking visually distinct and easy to read, without breaking them apart into two completely separate words.
