Reflexive Direct Objects
When the subject and the direct object of a sentence are the same person, we use a reflexive pronoun. Because this pronoun acts as a specific, known direct object, it must always be followed by the object marker را.
To build these, combine the base word خود, the possessive suffix for the person, and را:
- خودم را (myself)
- خودت را (yourself)
- خودش را (himself / herself)
Here is how you use them to talk about actions directed at yourself:
| I introduce myself to that teacher. | من خودم را به آن معلم معرفی میکنم.man khodam râ be ân mo'allem mo'arrefi mikonam. |
| I entertain myself with a book. |
Self-Care and Emotions
Reflexive direct objects are especially common when discussing emotional states, self-care, or internal conflicts. Notice how the object marker را always immediately follows the reflexive pronoun.
| Please do not blame yourself. |
| Why do you deceive yourself? cherâ khodat râ gul mizani? |
| She only deceives herself. |
| I do not have a problem, I control myself. |
| He always hurts himself. |
