Farsi uses several suffixes to create nouns for professions, trades, and active agents. Two of the most common are -گر and -کار.
The Suffix -گر
The suffix -گر indicates a "doer," "maker," or professional, frequently attaching to nouns or verb stems.
- گزارش (report) → گزارشگر (reporter)
- صنعت (craft/industry) → صنعتگر (craftsman)
- پژوهش (research) → پژوهشگر (researcher)
| The reporter was talking with the craftsman. | گزارشگر با صنعتگر صحبت میکرد.gozâreshgar bâ san'atgar sohbat mikard. |
| It is necessary for the researcher to read this document. | لازم است که پژوهشگر این سند را بخواند.lâzem ast ke pazhouheshgar in sanad râ bekhânad. |
The Suffix -کار
The suffix -کار comes from the word for "work" or "action." Attached to a noun, it describes someone whose job or lifestyle revolves around that concept.
- ورزش (sport) → ورزشکار (athlete)
- تعمیر (repair) → تعمیرکار (repairman)
- پیمان (contract) → پیمانکار (contractor)
| The researcher was asking the athlete a question. | پژوهشگر از ورزشکار سوال میپرسید.pazhuheshgar az varzeshkâr so'âl miporsid. |
| The contractor hired a new repairman. | پیمانکار یک تعمیرکار جدید استخدام کرد.peymânkâr yek ta'mirkâr jadid estekhdâm kard. |
Everyday Trades and Roles
These suffixes appear in dozens of occupational titles, combining with materials like آهن (iron) to make آهنگر (blacksmith), or concepts like خدمت (service) to make خدمتکار (maid/servant). They also form titles like رفتگر (street sweeper) and خلافکار (criminal).
| The blacksmith and the repairman were working together. | آهنگر و تعمیرکار با هم کار میکردند.âhangar o ta'mirkâr bâ ham kâr mikardand. |
