To describe defensive solutions like repellents and traps in Farsi, we form compound adjectives using a simple word of opposition.
The Word ضد
The word ضد translates to "anti-", "counter-", or "against".
| anti- / counter- | ضدzedd |
Place it before a noun and link the two with the ezafe vowel to create a compound adjective meaning "-repellent", "-proof", or "anti-".
Forming Resistance Adjectives
To describe a product that fights termites (موریانه), bedbugs (ساس), or fleas (کک), simply add ضد before the pest's name.
| We must use an anti-termite solution. | ما باید از محلول ضد موریانه استفاده کنیم.mâ bâyad az mahlul-e zedd-e mooriâne estefâde konim. |
| This anti-bedbug poison is very effective. | این سم ضد ساس بسیار موثر است.in samm-e zedd-e sâs besyâr mo'ather ast. |
| My cat needs an anti-flea and anti-tick collar. | گربه من به قلاده ضد کک و کنه نیاز دارد.gorbe man be qalâde zedd-e kak o kane niyâz dârad |
This structure is highly productive and works for any noun you wish to repel or defend against, from rodents (جونده) to moths (بید). Because the resulting phrase functions as an adjective, it usually follows the noun it describes (such as "poison" or "trap"), linking to it with the ezafe.
| We use an anti-rodent trap to repel these mice. | ما برای دفع این موشها از تله ضد جونده استفاده میکنیم.mâ barâye daf'e in mush-hâ az tale-ye zedd-e jonande estefâde mikonim. |
| I put the clothes in an anti-moth bag. | من لباسها را در یک کیسه ضد بید گذاشتم.man lebâs-hâ râ dar yek kise zedd bid gozâshtam. |
