Passive capability (qâbel-e)

Passive Capability (قابل)

To say a product is "rechargeable," "replaceable," or "washable," Farsi uses a passive capability construction.

Take the word قابل (capable of), attach the ezafe linking vowel to make it قابلِ, and follow it with an action noun or a long infinitive. This functions exactly like the English suffixes "-able" or "-ible".

With Action Nouns

Pairing قابل with an action noun like شارژ (charge) creates قابل شارژ (rechargeable), and with تعویض (replacement) creates قابل تعویض (replaceable).

With Long Infinitives

You can also form this construction using a long infinitive (the dictionary form of a verb ending in ن). For example, خواندن (to read) becomes قابل خواندن (readable), and دیدن (to see) becomes قابل دیدن (visible).
