Counting: The Singular Noun Rule
When counting objects or people in Farsi, the noun following a number is always singular. Never add a plural suffix to a counted noun.
| There are two small keys inside the bag. | دو کلید کوچک داخل کیف است.do kelid-e kuchak dâkhel-e kif ast |
| Are there four books on the teacher's desk? | آیا چهار کتاب روی میز معلم است؟âyâ chahâr ketâb ruye miz mo'allem ast? |
| No, there are five books there. | نه، پنج کتاب آنجا است.na, panj ketâb ânjâ ast. |
Asking "How Many" (چند)
To ask "how many", use the question word چند before the noun. Just like with numbers, the noun remains singular.
| How many cars are outside? | چند ماشین بیرون است؟chand mâshin birun ast? |
| There are three cars outside. | سه ماشین بیرون است.se mâshin birun ast. |
Numbers 6 to 10 and Telling Time
The counting pattern is the same for higher numbers. You can also pair a number directly with ساعت to state the time.
| It is six o'clock. | ساعت شش است.sâ'at shesh ast. |
| It is seven o'clock. | ساعت هفت است.sâ'at haft ast. |
| There are eight students in the professor's class. | هشت دانشجو در کلاس استاد هستند.hasht dâneshjoo dar kelâs-e ostâd hastand |
| These are ten beautiful photos. | اینها ده عکس زیبا هستند.inhâ dah aks zibâ hastand. |
