Negative Indefinite Pronouns
In Persian, to say "nobody," "nothing," or "nowhere," you use the word هیچ (none / any) combined with the base words for person (کس), thing (چیز), and place (جا).
- هیچکس (nobody / no one)
- هیچچیز (nothing)
- هیچجا (nowhere)
The Double Negative Rule
Unlike English, Persian requires a double negative structure. When you use a negative indefinite pronoun in a sentence, the main verb must also be negative.
Literally, you translate these sentences as "Nobody wasn't there" or "I didn't feel nothing."
| Nobody is inside the closet. | هیچکس داخل کمد نیست.hich-kas dâkhel komod nist. |
| I feel nothing. | من هیچچیز حس نمیکنم.man hich-chiz hess nemikonam. |
| I didn't go anywhere today. The closet is empty. | امروز هیچجا نرفتم. کمد خالی است.emrooz hich-jâ naraftam. komod khâli ast. |
Describing Empty Spaces
This double negative structure is extremely common when describing empty spaces, missing items, or mysterious situations. Pay attention to how the negative pronoun and the negative verb work together in these examples:
| Nobody was in the dark and scary hall. | هیچکس در سالن تاریک و ترسناک نبود.hich-kas dar sâlon târik va tarsnâk nabud. |
| He found nothing in the empty trunk. | او در صندوق خالی هیچچیز پیدا نکرد.u dar sanduq-e khâli hich-chiz peydâ nakard. |
| I saw a shadow in the hall, but nobody was there. | یک سایه در سالن دیدم، اما هیچکس آنجا نبود.yek sâye dar sâlon didam, ammâ hich kas ânjâ nabud. |
| I am going nowhere because it is dark outside. | من هیچجا نمیروم چون بیرون تاریک است.man hich-jâ nemi-ravam chon birun târik ast. |
