Narrative Interruptions with که
To describe a sudden event that interrupts an ongoing background action, link a clause in the Past Continuous with a clause in the Simple Past using the conjunction که.
In this structure, که acts like "when" or "and suddenly":

Cause and Immediate Sequence
Not all events in a narrative are interruptions.
