Location suffixes (-gah, -khaneh, -estan)

Building Words with Location Suffixes

You can easily build Farsi vocabulary by attaching suffixes to nouns or verb stems. Let's look at three common suffixes used to derive locations: گاه, خانه, and ستان.

The Suffix گاه

The suffix گاه denotes a "place" (and sometimes a "time"). When attached to a noun or verb root, it creates a place where that activity happens. For example, adding it to خواب (sleep) creates "dormitory," and to پژوهش (research) creates "research institute."

Similarly, combining it with درمان (treatment) forms the word for "clinic."

The Suffix خانه

The word خانه literally means "house" or "home." As a suffix, it attaches to nouns to denote a building, room, or establishment. For instance, a place for چاپ (printing) becomes a printing house, and a place for مهمان (guests) becomes a guesthouse.

This suffix is highly versatile for describing specialized spaces, ranging from utility areas for a موتور (engine/motor) to social hubs dedicated to چای (tea).

The Suffix ستان

The suffix ستان historically indicates a "land" or place of abundance (as seen in country names like Afghanistan). In modern Farsi, it is frequently used to name educational or cultural institutions.

When attached to فرهنگ (culture), it forms the word for a cultural "academy." Combined with هنر (art), it creates an "art school" or vocational school, and with دبیر (teacher/secretary), it forms "high school."
