The Indefinite Marker (یک ... ـی)
When you want to talk about "a certain" or "a particular" person or thing without specifying exactly which one, Farsi uses a two-part indefinite marker.
To build this structure, place the word یک before the noun and attach the suffix ـی to the end.
| Do you play a certain instrument? | آیا تو یک سازی میزنی؟âyâ to yek sâzi mizani? |
| She wants to buy a certain violin. | او میخواهد یک ویولنی بخرد.u mikhâhad yek violoni bekharad. |
If the noun ends in a vowel, the suffix changes spelling to connect smoothly. Words ending in a silent heh take an Alef (ای), while words ending in other vowels take an extra Yeh (یی).
| A certain musician likes that instrument. | یک نوازندهای آن ساز را دوست دارد.yek navâzande-i ân sâz râ dust dârad. |
| A certain piano is inside the room. | یک پیانویی داخل اتاق است.yek piyânoyi dâkhel-e otâgh ast. |
When this "certain" noun is a specific direct object, the object marker را always comes after the indefinite suffix.
| I want to see a certain orchestra. | من میخواهم یک ارکستری را ببینم.man mikhâham yek orkestri râ bebinam. |
| I must tune a certain piano. | من باید یک پیانویی را کوک کنم.man bâyad yek piyânoyi râ kuk konam. |
