Asking "How much" with چقدر
To ask about uncountable quantities—like ingredients for baking—use the question word چقدر (how much). Just like in English, it usually sits directly before the noun you are asking about.
| how much | چقدرcheqadr |
| How much flour do we need? | ما چقدر آرد نیاز داریم؟mâ cheqadr ârd niyâz dârim? |
| How much sugar should I add to the milk? | من باید چقدر شکر به شیر اضافه کنم؟man bâyad cheghadr shekar be shir ezâfe konam? |
Kitchen Measurements
When answering "how much," you will often use measurement words like پیمانه (measuring cup), قاشق (spoon), or کیلو (kilo).
In Farsi, you place the number and the measurement word directly before the uncountable noun. You do not use an ezafe to connect them (it translates more literally to "one cup oil" rather than "one cup of oil").
| You must buy one cup of oil. | تو باید یک پیمانه روغن بخری.to bâyad yek peymâne roghan bekhari. |
| I added three spoons of sugar. | من سه قاشق شکر اضافه کردم.man se ghâshogh shekar ezâfe kardam. |
| They bought ten kilos of flour. | آنها ده کیلو آرد خریدند.ânhâ dah kilo ârd kharidand. |
Notice that چقدر can also be used to ask about amounts where it sits alone or acts as the subject of the sentence.
| How much butter is on the table? | چقدر کره روی میز است؟cheqadr kare ruye miz ast? |
