Healing, much like learning a language, takes time. In Farsi, to express that an action happens gradually or step-by-step, you can use reduplication—repeating a word to change or emphasize its meaning.
Simple Reduplication
To describe an action happening "little by little" or "one by one," simply repeat a noun, adjective, or numeral back-to-back:
- ذره ذره (bit by bit)
- کمکم (little by little)
- دانه دانه (one by one)
By placing the repeated word in the sentence as an adverb, you show that the process is gradual or distributive:
| The knee's cartilage heals bit by bit. | غضروف زانو ذره ذره ترمیم میشود.ghazruf zânu zarre zarre tarmim mishavad. |
| I decided to increase the tendon's range of motion little by little. | من تصمیم گرفتم که دامنهی حرکت تاندون را کمکم زیاد کنم.man tasmim gereftam ke dâmane-ye harekat tândon râ kamkam ziâd konam. |
| The doctor checked the joints one by one to find the swelling. | دکتر مفصلها را دانه دانه بررسی کرد تا ورم را پیدا کند.doktor mafsal-hâ râ dâne dâne barresi kard tâ varam râ peydâ konad. |
Linking with به
Another common way to express gradual progress is by linking the repeated noun with the preposition به. This pattern creates phrases equivalent to English expressions like "day by day" or "step by step."
- روز به روز (day by day)
- مرحله به مرحله (stage by stage)
- جلسه به جلسه (session by session)
- گام به گام (step by step)
These phrases show how a state or action is progressing steadily over time:
| In physical therapy, inflammation decreases stage by stage. | در فیزیوتراپی، التهاب مرحله به مرحله کاهش مییابد.dar fizioterâpi, eltehâb marhale be marhale kâhesh mi-yâbad. |
| The joint's swelling gets better day by day, while the pain is still severe. | ورم مفصل روز به روز بهتر میشود، در حالی که درد هنوز شدید است.varam-e mafsal ruz be ruz behtar mishavad, dar hâli ke dard hanuz shadid ast. |
| Session by session, the tendon gets strong and its range of motion expands. | جلسه به جلسه، تاندون قوی میشود و دامنهی حرکت آن گسترش مییابد.jalase be jalase, tândon-e qavi mishavad va dâmane-ye harekat-e ân gostaresh miyâbad. |
