The Matter at Hand
Everyday Persian conversation leans on a small set of glue nouns. The first is قضیه (matter, affair) — the thing people are discussing.
| This matter is important. | این قضیه مهم است.in qazie mohem ast. |
| What is the matter? | قضیه چیست؟qaziye chist? |
Kinds, Wholes, and Loads
جور (kind, sort) is the colloquial partner of نوع. Ask about kinds with چه جور:
| What kind of book is this? | این چه جور کتابی است؟in che jur ketâbi ast? |
کل (the whole of) and کلی (loads of) come from the same Arabic root for "all", but split the work: کلِ + noun measures completeness, while کلی + noun piles up quantity.
| The whole day I was at home. | کلِ روز در خانه بودم.kol-e ruz dar khâne budam |
| I have loads of work. | کلی کار دارم.koli kâr dâram. |
Except and Separate
غیر pairs with از to mean "other than, except". جدا (separate) describes things kept apart — it also works as an adverb, "separately".
| There is no one besides you. | غیر از تو کسی نیست.gheyr az to kasi nist. |
| We live separately. | ما جدا زندگی میکنیم.mâ jodâ zendegi mikonim. |
Counting Cases, Calls, and Dollars
مورد (case, instance) counts examples the way بار counts occasions — چند مورد = a few cases. تماس (contact, call) is the noun living inside the long-taught تماس گرفتن, and دلار needs no introduction.
| We have a few important cases. | چند مورد مهم داریم.chand mored mohem dârim. |
| I have an important call. | یک تماس مهم دارم.yek tamâs-e mohem dâram. |
| This book is ten dollars. | این کتاب ده دلار است.in ketâb dah dolâr ast. |
