Conceptual prefixes (farâ-, zir-, pish-)

Prefix, Morphology, and Derivation

In linguistics, morphology (صرف) studies the structure of words. Derivation (اشتقاق) is the process of forming new words. One of the main ways Farsi creates formal vocabulary is by attaching a prefix (پیشوند) to a root word.

The Prefix زیر- (sub- / infra-)

The word زیر means "under." As a prefix, it acts exactly like "sub-" or "infra-", indicating something that belongs beneath a larger structure or forms a base. For instance, attaching it to the word for "collection" creates زیرمجموعه (subcategory / subset).

The Prefix فرا- (trans- / beyond / encompassing)

The prefix فرا- conveys the idea of going "beyond," "across," or encompassing a whole process. It is commonly used to form nouns related to overarching concepts, such as فراگیری (acquisition / encompassing learning).

The Prefix پیش- (pre- / fore-)

The word پیش means "before" or "front." As a conceptual prefix, it maps perfectly to "pre-" or "fore-", dealing with things that must exist or happen beforehand.

With this, you can build words like پیش‌نیاز (prerequisite), پیش‌زمینه (background / context), and پیش‌فرض (presupposition / assumption).

Expanding the Prefixes

As you build a more academic vocabulary, you will frequently encounter sentences that mix these conceptual prefixes to express complex ideas.

For instance, the prefix زیر- also creates زیربنا (foundation / infrastructure). Here it is used alongside the newly learned پیش‌فرض (presupposition):

The prefix فرا- is also highly productive for creating adjectives that describe things going above and beyond regular limits, such as فراگیر (comprehensive / widespread) and فرامنطقه‌ای (trans-regional).

Suffixes

Just as we use a prefix at the beginning of a word, we can also use a suffix (پسوند) at the end. Together, prefixes and suffixes play a vital role in word derivation.
