Almost happening in the past (nazdik bud ke)

Close Calls

To talk about something that almost happened but ultimately did not, Persian uses the phrase نزدیک بود که (literally: it was close that).

almost / it was close that
نزدیک بود کهnazdik bud ke

Even though you are describing a near miss in the past, the verb that follows this phrase must be in the Present Subjunctive. This is because, at that specific moment in the past, the action was an unrealized possibility.

Compound Verbs

This structure is perfectly suited for describing dramatic situations, sudden frights, and narrow escapes, which often use compound verbs. Just like with any subjunctive clause, only the verbal half of the compound (such as کردن، شدن, or گرفتن) changes its form.
