Agent nouns (-ande)

Forming Agent Nouns

In Farsi, you can create an "agent noun" (a noun describing a person or thing that performs an action) by adding the suffix نده (or ـنده depending on how it connects to the preceding letter) to the present stem of a verb.

For example, the verb ساختن (to make or create) has the present stem ساز. Add the suffix to get سازنده (creator).

Compound Verbs with کردن

Many media and professional roles are formed from compound verbs that use the light verb کردن (to do). The present stem of کردن is کن, so the agent suffix always becomes ـکننده. You simply attach this to the first part of the compound verb.

For example, تهیه کردن (to produce) becomes تهیه‌کننده (producer).

The Ezafe with Agent Nouns

Because the suffix ـنده ends in the silent letter ه, remember that you must use ی to form the Ezafe connector when linking these roles to the things they manage, create, or distribute.

Other Compound Verbs

This rule applies to any compound verb. If the compound verb uses دادن (to give), you use its present stem ده. The suffix then becomes ـدهنده.

For instance, the agent noun for گزارش دادن (to report) is گزارش‌دهنده (reporter).
