Adjectives of resemblance (-vâr, -âsâ, -mânand)

When discussing developments in robotics and artificial intelligence, we frequently compare new technologies to familiar things. We might describe a machine as "human-like" or say it calculates data "lightning-fast." In Farsi, you can build these descriptive adjectives and adverbs by attaching specific suffixes of resemblance to nouns.

Scale and Speed with آسا

The suffix آسا attaches to nouns to form adjectives that express a resemblance. It is especially common when emphasizing immense scale, power, or speed. For example, attaching it to "lightning" (برق) creates "lightning-fast," and attaching it to "giant" (غول) creates "gigantic."

Physical Resemblance with مانند

The suffix مانند is one of the most direct ways to say "like" or "similar to." It frequently creates adjectives describing a physical or structural resemblance to the base noun, such as comparing a machine to a human (انسان).

Manner and Behavior with وار

While the previous suffixes often focus on physical traits or scale, the suffix وار frequently creates adverbs of manner. It describes how an action is performed by comparing it to the typical behavior of the base noun. For instance, if an AI repeats data without understanding it, it does so "parrot-like" (طوطی).

If a system operates mechanically and tirelessly, it acts "robotically" (ربات) or "machine-like" (ماشین).

You can also use it to describe movement, such as something moving "shadow-like" (سایه) or stealthily.
