Questions & Answers about Ik heb mijn sleutel nog niet gevonden.
What verb does gevonden come from, and why does it look like that?
It is the past participle of the verb vinden (to find). Vinden is an irregular verb. Instead of taking a standard ending like regular verbs do, the vowel in the middle changes from "i" to "o". It also gets the standard ge- prefix and ends in -en, making it gevonden.
Why is gevonden placed at the very end of the sentence?
In Dutch, when you use a helper verb like heb (have) to talk about the past, the main action verb—the past participle gevonden—gets pushed to the very end of the sentence. The helper verb stays in the second position.
How does nog niet translate to "not yet"?
On its own, nog usually means "still", and niet means "not". When you combine them into nog niet, the phrase translates directly to "not yet" in English.
Why does nog niet come after mijn sleutel (my key)?
In Dutch, the negative word niet usually comes after a specific object. Because mijn sleutel is a specific, identified thing (you are talking about your key, not just any key), the phrase nog niet must be placed after it.
