Questions & Answers about Al zwaaiend balanceert de clown behendig op één been.
Why do we use al zwaaiend here instead of just zwaaiend?
Adding al before a present participle emphasizes that the two actions (waving and balancing) are happening at the exact same time. While you could just say zwaaiend, al zwaaiend gives it a more dynamic, ongoing feel, similar to saying all the while waving in English.
Why does the verb balanceert come before the subject de clown?
The phrase al zwaaiend acts as a single block occupying the first position in the sentence. Because Dutch strictly follows the verb-second rule, the main verb balanceert must take the second position. This forces the subject de clown to invert and take the third position.
Why does één have accent marks on it?
The accent marks are used to distinguish the number one (één) from the indefinite article a or an (een). Without these accents, the sentence would just mean the clown is balancing on a leg, rather than specifically emphasizing that it is only one leg.
Is there a difference between behendig and handig for translating skillfully?
Yes, behendig specifically refers to physical agility, nimbleness, or dexterity, which is perfect for a balancing clown. Handig is broader and often means handy, convenient, or clever in a practical sense, so it would sound less natural here.
