Questions & Answers about De trekvogels bewegen massaal door de lucht.
The current lesson is about indefinite numbers like tientallen or duizenden. How could we use one in this sentence instead of massaal?
To emphasize the exact scale of the flock, you could replace massaal with a phrase like met duizenden tegelijk (by the thousands at once). For example: De trekvogels bewegen met duizenden tegelijk door de lucht. You could also use a '-tallen' word directly to quantify the birds: Duizendtallen trekvogels bewegen door de lucht (Thousands of migratory birds move through the sky).
What does the trek part of trekvogels mean?
It comes from the verb trekken, which means to pull, but also to travel, march, or migrate. A trekvogel is literally a migrating bird. You will also see this root in words like trektocht (a hike or trek) and vertrekken (to leave or depart).
Does lucht mean 'sky' or 'air'?
It actually means both! In Dutch, de lucht is used for the physical air we breathe, as well as the sky where clouds and birds are. Context almost always makes it clear which English word fits best in translation.
Why use bewegen (to move) here instead of vliegen (to fly)?
While vliegen would be perfectly correct, using bewegen places the focus on the visual motion of the flock shifting as a massive entity, rather than just the physical act of flying. It gives the sentence a slightly more descriptive, sweeping feel.
