To describe large, unspecified quantities, Dutch uses indefinite numeric aggregates. To say "dozens of" or "tens of," add the suffix -tallen to tien (ten) to form tientallen. Unlike English, Dutch places the aggregate word directly before the noun without a preposition like "of".
| I see dozens of migratory birds. | Ik zie tientallen trekvogels. |
| What a flock! Dozens of birds fly southwards. | Wat een zwerm! Tientallen vogels vliegen zuidwaarts. |
For larger quantities, simply add -en to base numbers like honderd (hundred) and duizend (thousand) to form honderden and duizenden.
| Hundreds of migratory birds cover the sky. | Honderden trekvogels bedekken de lucht. |
| Thousands of migratory birds were flying in a flock. | Duizenden trekvogels waren in een zwerm aan het vliegen. |
You can also combine number roots for massive estimates, such as tienduizenden (tens of thousands).
| Tens of thousands of birds cover the sun. | Tienduizenden vogels bedekken de zon. |
| The migratory birds move en masse through the sky. | De trekvogels bewegen massaal door de lucht. |
