Questions & Answers about De fabriek is tijdelijk gesloten in verband met de brand.
How exactly does in verband met translate, and when should I use it?
While it literally translates to "in connection with", in contexts like this it is best understood as "due to" or "because of". It is a formal, slightly bureaucratic phrase, commonly used in official announcements, news reports, and on signs.
Could I just say door de brand or vanwege de brand here?
Absolutely. Both door (because of) and vanwege (due to) are perfect, more everyday alternatives. Using in verband met just elevates the sentence to sound like an official company statement or a news broadcast.
Is there a common abbreviation for in verband met?
Yes, it is extremely common to see this abbreviated as i.v.m. in written Dutch, especially on signs or in brief announcements. For example, a sign on the factory door might just read: Gesloten i.v.m. brand.
Why does the sentence use is gesloten instead of wordt gesloten?
is gesloten is the passive of state. It tells us the current status or result (the factory is currently in a closed state). If you used wordt gesloten, it would mean the actual action of locking the doors and shutting down the factory is happening right now ("the factory is being closed").
