Questions & Answers about Ook al is het lastig, het plastic is scheidbaar.
How does the suffix -baar work to form scheidbaar?
The suffix -baar acts just like the English suffix "-able", turning a verb into an adjective that expresses potential (meaning something can be done). You take the stem of the verb scheiden (to separate), which is scheid, and add -baar to get scheidbaar (separable).
Why is the word order is het lastig and not het lastig is, like in a normal dependent clause?
Unlike hoewel (although), which pushes the verb to the very end of the clause, the phrase ook al (even though) triggers inversion in its own clause. It acts as the first idea in the sentence, so the verb comes immediately after it: Ook al + verb (is) + subject (het).
Since the sentence starts with an introductory clause, why doesn't the second clause use inversion (...is het plastic scheidbaar)?
This is a notorious and surprising exception in Dutch grammar! Normally, an introductory clause takes up the first position and forces the next clause to start with the verb. However, after an ook al clause, the following main clause usually keeps standard Subject-Verb order (het plastic is...). While inversion isn't strictly forbidden here, the standard word order is much more common and sounds more natural.
