Since this lesson is about diminutives, what is the diminutive form of spul?
The diminutive is spulletje (which often means "little things" or "belongings", and is usually used in the plural as spulletjes). Because spul has a short vowel and ends in the consonant l, you add the suffix -etje and double the l to make sure the vowel sound stays short.
Why does the sentence use ligt (lies) instead of just saying "where is"?
In Dutch, it is much more natural to use a positional verb (liggen, staan, or zitten) to describe where something is located, rather than just using the verb zijn (to be). Because spul (stuff) usually doesn't have a fixed, upright shape and just rests flat in a pile or on a surface, we use liggen (to lie).
Why is it dat spul and not die spul?
Spul is a neuter noun, meaning it takes the definite article het (het spul). For all het-words, you must use dat (that) and dit (this). You only use die and deze for de-words or plurals.
