Questions & Answers about De koeien staan in de wei.
The current lesson is about irregular '-eren' plurals. How does koeien fit in?
This lesson covers irregular plurals in general. While words like kind become kinderen, the word koe (cow) has its own unique irregular plural: koeien. Instead of just adding -en, an extra i is added to make the pronunciation flow smoothly (creating a 'y' sound between the vowels).
Why do we use staan instead of just translating 'are' as zijn?
Dutch speakers prefer to be specific about exactly how something is positioned. For animals on their legs, or upright objects, we use staan (to stand). While saying De koeien zijn in de wei is grammatically correct and understandable, using staan is the natural, native way to express location here.
Is wei a complete word? I've seen weide used for meadow before.
Good catch! wei is simply a shortened version of weide. They mean the exact same thing (pasture or meadow) and use the same article (de). In everyday spoken Dutch, wei is much more common than the full word.
Why do we say the cows are in de wei instead of op de wei (on the meadow)?
