Why do we use een before miljoen?
Just like in English where you say "a million" or "one million," Dutch requires een before large numbers like honderd (a hundred) and miljoen (a million) when they stand alone. You cannot just say Miljoen is veel geld.
Is een pronounced with an "uh" sound or an "ayn" sound here?
Because it translates to "a million", it is pronounced as the unstressed "uh". If you wanted to emphasize exactly "one million" (and not two million), you would write it with accent marks as één miljoen and pronounce it "ayn".
How is miljoen pronounced?
The ilj part sounds like "ily" (similar to the middle of the English word "million"). The oe makes an "oo" sound. So the whole word sounds roughly like "mill-yoon".
Why is there no -e on the end of veel?
Geld (money) is an uncountable noun, just like water or sand. When veel (much / a lot of) comes before an uncountable noun, it doesn't get an extra -e added to the end.
Why does geld sound like it ends with a 't'?
