Questions & Answers about Het fotootje ligt in het laatje.
Why is it fotootje with a double 'o' when the base word is foto?
The base word foto ends in a long 'o' sound. If we just added -tje to make fototje, the single 'o' would be followed by consonants and pronounced as a short sound (like in 'pot'). To keep the 'o' sounding long, we must double the vowel, making it fotootje.
What is the base word for laatje, and why is the vowel doubled here?
The base word is la, which is a very common short form of lade (drawer). Because la ends in a long, open 'a' sound, it follows the exact same rule as fotootje: we double the 'a' before adding -tje to keep the vowel sound long.
Both foto and la are normally de words. Why does this sentence use het for both?
In Dutch, all diminutive nouns (words ending in -je, -tje, etc.) are automatically neuter words. This means they always take het, even if the original base word used de.
Why use ligt (lies) instead of just saying the photo is in the drawer?
