Questions & Answers about Zij pakt de emmer meteen.
Why does de emmer come before the time word meteen?
Because de emmer is a definite direct object (it uses de, meaning the bucket). In Dutch, definite objects are placed before adverbs of Time, Manner, and Place (TMP). Since meteen is a time adverb, the definite object must come first.
What would the word order be if the sentence was 'She grabs a bucket immediately'?
It would be Zij pakt meteen een emmer. Because een emmer is an indefinite direct object (using een instead of de), it must be placed after the time adverb meteen.
Could I start this sentence with meteen?
Yes, but you must remember the V2 (verb second) rule. If you put meteen at the front, the verb pakt must remain in the second position, pushing the subject zij after the verb: Meteen pakt zij de emmer.
Can I use neemt instead of pakt here?
You could say Zij neemt de emmer meteen, but pakken is more natural for the physical action of grabbing, snatching, or picking something up with your hands. Nemen (to take) is often used more abstractly or when talking about consuming something.
