Questions & Answers about Je speelt alsof je de tegenstander al hebt verslagen.
Why do hebt and verslagen both go at the end of the sentence?
The word alsof (as if) is a subordinating conjunction. This means it introduces a dependent clause and pushes all of its verbs to the very end. While the main clause Je speelt has normal word order, everything after alsof follows this verb-final rule.
Could I say verslagen hebt instead of hebt verslagen at the end?
Yes, absolutely. When you have a helping verb (hebt) and a past participle (verslagen) at the end of a subordinate clause, Dutch allows you to put them in either order. Both hebt verslagen and verslagen hebt are perfectly correct and commonly used by native speakers.
Why doesn't the past participle verslagen have a ge- at the beginning?
The infinitive of the verb is verslaan (to defeat). Because it starts with ver-, which is an inseparable prefix, it does not get the standard ge- prefix when turned into a past participle. Other common prefixes that block the ge- include be-, ont-, and er-.
