Questions & Answers about Het kantoor is tijdelijk dicht vanwege de chaos.
Could I use wegens instead of vanwege in this sentence?
Yes, you can use wegens here (wegens de chaos). Both vanwege and wegens mean 'due to' or 'because of' and are largely interchangeable. Wegens can sound slightly more formal or official, but both are perfectly fine in this context.
Why does the sentence use dicht instead of gesloten for 'closed'?
Both words mean 'closed' and are correct. Gesloten is the formal past participle of sluiten (to close), often seen on official signs. Dicht is a very common, everyday word used for shops, offices, doors, and windows.
What happens to the word order if I start the sentence with vanwege de chaos?
Starting a sentence with a prepositional phrase triggers inversion, meaning the verb and subject swap places. The sentence would become: Vanwege de chaos is het kantoor tijdelijk dicht. Notice how the verb is comes right before the subject het kantoor.
How do I pronounce the ending of tijdelijk?
As a quick refresher, the suffix -lijk is pronounced like '-luk' (with a short, unstressed 'uh' sound, known as a schwa). Even though it is spelled with 'ij', you do not pronounce it like the 'ij' in tijd.
