Questions & Answers about Hoeveel artikelen heb jij? Ik verkoop er enkele.
Why does enkele not have an '-n' at the end here?
We only add an -n to independent quantifying pronouns (like enkelen or sommigen) when they refer to people. Because enkele refers back to artikelen (items), which are things rather than people, it does not get the -n.
Why is the word er used in the second sentence?
It translates to 'of them'. In Dutch, whenever you use a number or a quantifier like enkele to refer back to a noun that you have omitted, you must include er. You cannot just say Ik verkoop enkele; you have to say Ik verkoop er enkele.
What is the difference between enkele and sommige?
While both can be translated as 'some', enkele is usually better translated as 'a few' and implies a smaller, countable amount. Sommige refers to a portion of a larger group (meaning 'some, but not all').
Could artikelen also mean 'articles' like in a newspaper?
Yes! Artikelen (or artikels) can refer to newspaper articles, grammatical articles (like 'the' or 'a'), or, as in this context of selling things, 'items' or 'products'.
