Questions & Answers about Jullie moeten beide projecten afmaken.
Why is it beide here instead of beiden?
You only use beiden (with an -n) when it stands completely on its own as a pronoun and refers to people, such as in Zij komen beiden (They are both coming). Because beide is placed directly in front of the noun projecten (projects) here, it acts as an adjective and does not get the extra -n.
Could I use allebei instead of beide in this sentence?
Yes, but the grammar changes slightly. Beide connects directly to the noun (beide projecten). If you use allebei, you have to add the definite article de, making it: Jullie moeten allebei de projecten afmaken. Both mean exactly the same thing, though allebei is a bit more common in everyday spoken Dutch.
Why is the verb afmaken at the very end of the sentence?
This is due to the modal verb moeten (must). When a sentence has a modal verb, it takes the second position (moeten) and pushes the main action verb (afmaken) to the very end of the clause in its full infinitive form.
Is afmaken a separable verb, and why isn't it split here?
Yes, afmaken is a separable verb made of af (finished/off) + maken (to make). However, separable verbs only split when they are the conjugated active verb in the sentence. Because the modal verb moeten pushes afmaken to the end as a full infinitive, it stays glued together as one word. If you dropped moeten, it would split: Jullie maken beide projecten af.
