Oma's computer is nieuw.

Questions & Answers about Oma's computer is nieuw.

Why does Oma's have an apostrophe in Dutch?
When a name or family member ends in a single open vowel (like a, o, u, or i), we add an apostrophe plus s ('s) to show possession. This is done to keep the vowel sound long. If we just wrote Omas, the rules of Dutch spelling would make the a sound short!
Where did the article (de or het) for computer go?
Just like in English, we drop the article when we use a possessive form right before the noun. Even though it is normally de computer, it becomes just Oma's computer (never Oma's de computer).
Why is the adjective nieuw instead of nieuwe?
Adjectives only get an extra -e when they are placed directly before the noun they describe (as in de nieuwe computer). Because nieuw comes after the verb is here, it takes its basic, short form.
