Why does ding get the suffix -etje instead of just -je or -tje?
The base word ding (thing) ends in the -ng sound and has only one syllable. In Dutch, short one-syllable words ending in -ng, -l, -r, -m, or -n usually get the -etje suffix. This adds an extra syllable and makes the word much easier to pronounce without tripping over the consonants.
Why do we use dit instead of deze for "this"?
All diminutive words in Dutch (words ending in -je, -tje, -etje, etc.) automatically become het words. Because dingetje is a het word, you must use dit for "this".
