Why is there an apostrophe in oma's?
In Dutch, nouns that end in a single open vowel (a, i, o, u, or y) get an apostrophe plus s ('s) for the plural. This tells you to keep pronouncing the vowel as a long sound. If we just wrote omas, the rules of Dutch spelling would make it look like a short vowel.
Why is the word order normal after want? Shouldn't the verb go to the end?
The word want (because) connects two normal sentences, meaning the word order stays exactly the same (het is lente). If you used the other word for because, omdat, the verb would be pushed to the very end of the sentence: omdat het lente is.
Why doesn't blij have an -e at the end to match the plural noun?
Adjectives usually get an -e ending when they are placed directly in front of a noun, like in de blije oma's. But here, blij comes after the verb zijn (are). When an adjective is used this way, it never gets an -e ending, even if the noun is plural.
Why is it het is lente instead of het is de lente?
