Learn Dutch: Deze taart is echt zoet. - This cake is really sweet.

In Dutch, the word for "this" depends on the noun's gender. Because taart is a de-word (de taart), we use deze. If it were a het-word, like het water (the water), we would use dit (dit water).

Why doesn't zoet have an -e at the end here?

When an adjective comes after the verb (like is here), it never gets an extra -e. You only add the -e when the adjective comes directly in front of the noun, like in de zoete taart (the sweet cake).

Does taart mean "tart" or "cake"?

It means both! While it looks like the English word "tart", taart is the standard Dutch word for any large cake or pie, such as a birthday cake.

Can echt also mean "real"?

Yes. As an adjective, echt means "real" or "genuine". In this sentence, it is used as an adverb to describe how sweet the cake is, so it translates to "really" or "truly".
