Questions & Answers about Waar is de wc?
How is the word wc pronounced in Dutch?
You pronounce it by saying the Dutch alphabet letters: w is pronounced like 'vay' and c is pronounced like 'say'. Put together, you say 'vay-say'.
Since this lesson is about er (unstressed 'there'), how would I use it to answer this question?
If someone asks where the toilet is, and you want to say 'I am there' (inside it), you say Ik ben er. Here, er replaces the place you just talked about. However, if you are pointing out the location to the person asking, you need the stressed word for 'there', which is daar. You would say Hij is daar.
Why does this sentence use de for wc?
In Dutch, almost all abbreviations and acronyms automatically become de words. That is why it is de wc, even if you do not know the gender of the original English phrase (water closet) it comes from.
Is it polite to ask for the wc, or should I ask for the bathroom?
It is perfectly normal and polite in Dutch to ask for de wc or het toilet. You should not ask for the bathroom (de badkamer) unless you actually want to take a bath or shower!
