Questions & Answers about Mijn broer gaat ook mee.
Why is mee at the very end of the sentence?
This is because the sentence uses the separable verb meegaan (to go along). In a normal present-tense sentence, the main part of the verb (gaat) takes the second position, but the prefix (mee) detaches and moves to the very end of the clause.
What is the full dictionary form of the verb used here?
The full verb is meegaan. Because the subject is Mijn broer (he), the verb part gaan is conjugated as gaat. So the sentence splits it into Mijn broer gaat ... mee.
Why is it translated as 'coming along' instead of 'going along'?
In Dutch, meegaan literally means to go with or to go along. English speakers often say 'coming along' or 'coming with' in this context, but Dutch uses the verb for 'to go' (gaan) when referring to leaving a place to go somewhere else together.
Could I put ook at the end of the sentence instead?
No, the separated prefix (mee) must always go at the very end of this type of sentence. Other small words like the adverb ook (also) must be placed before the prefix.
