Learn Dutch: Honderd collega's werken vandaag. - One hundred colleagues are working today.

In Dutch, you do not use the word een (one) before 100 or 1,000. You simply say honderd (hundred) and duizend (thousand). You only add numbers in front when you reach 200 (tweehonderd), 300 (driehonderd), and so on.

Why does collega's have an apostrophe before the 's'?

In Dutch, if a noun ends in a single open vowel (like a, i, o, u, or y), you add an apostrophe plus 's' ('s) to make it plural. This shows that the vowel keeps its 'long' pronunciation. Without the apostrophe, the 'a' at the end of the word would sound like a short vowel.

Is the 'd' at the end of honderd pronounced like a 't'?

Yes! In Dutch, whenever a word ends with the letter d, it is pronounced as a 't' sound. So honderd is pronounced like 'hondert'.

Could I move vandaag to the beginning and say 'Vandaag honderd collega's werken'?

No, because of the 'verb second' rule. In a standard Dutch sentence, the working verb must be in the second position. If you put vandaag in the first position, the verb werken must come immediately after it, making the sentence: Vandaag werken honderd collega's.
