Questions & Answers about Waar is de tas?
Why does waar come at the beginning of the sentence?
Waar means "where". Just like in English, Dutch question words (like wie, wat, and waar) are placed at the very beginning of the question to show what information is missing.
Why is the verb is placed before de tas?
When a sentence starts with a question word like waar, the verb comes right after it in the second position, followed by the subject (de tas). Luckily, this matches the English word order for "Where is the bag?" perfectly!
Why do we use de for "the bag" instead of het?
In Dutch, every noun uses either de or het for the word "the". Tas is a word that happens to take de. Because there is no simple rule for most words, it is best to memorize the article (de or het) whenever you learn a new noun.
Why are there two 'a's in waar?
The double aa makes a long "ah" sound, similar to the "a" in the English word "father" or "car". Doubling a vowel in Dutch is the standard way to show that the vowel sound is long.
