Setting Aside Exceptions: "Afgezien van"
When evaluating a property, you often need to acknowledge a minor issue before giving your overall verdict. In Dutch, you can frame this exception at the beginning of your sentence using the complex preposition afgezien van (apart from).
Because the afgezien van phrase occupies the first position in the sentence, the main clause that follows must use inversion (verb + subject).
| Apart from that stain, the apartment is ready for the final inspection. | Afgezien van die vlek is het appartement klaar voor de eindinspectie. |
| Apart from a small defect in the kitchen, everything is perfect. | Afgezien van een klein gebrek in de keuken is alles perfect. |
This structure is highly useful during a final inspection when evaluating wear and tear, outlining what needs fixing, or noting final details.
| Apart from normal wear and tear, we find the condition of the floor acceptable. | Afgezien van normale slijtage vinden wij de staat van de vloer aanvaardbaar. |
| Apart from the meter reading, we still need to note down two things. | Afgezien van de meterstand moeten we nog twee dingen noteren. |
| Apart from one problem, we will fix everything and refund the deposit. | Afgezien van één probleem zullen wij alles verhelpen en de borg terugstorten. |
