Restrictive Clauses: voor zover
To set a limit or condition on a statement, use the conjunction voor zover (as far as / to the extent that).
Because voor zover introduces a subordinate clause, it pushes the conjugated verb to the very end of its clause. If you start your sentence with the voor zover clause, that entire clause takes up the first position. The main clause that follows must then begin immediately with its verb (inversion).
| As far as I know, the policy is valid. | Voor zover ik weet, is de polis geldig. |
Subordinate Clause at the End
You can also place the voor zover clause after the main clause. In this case, the main clause keeps a normal subject-verb word order, while the voor zover clause still sends its own verb to the end.
| We pay out, as far as the coverage is sufficient. | Wij keren uit, voor zover de dekking voldoende is. |
Discussing Insurance
Because it establishes terms and limits, voor zover is the perfect tool for discussing insurance policies, coverage, and liability (aansprakelijk).
| As far as we know, the policy covers medical care. | Voor zover wij weten, dekt de polis medische zorg. |
| They are going to pay out, as far as you are liable. | Ze gaan uitkeren, voor zover jij aansprakelijk bent. |
| The insurance covers the damage, as far as the policy is valid. | De verzekering dekt de schade, voor zover de polis geldig is. |
