Saying "Also" and "Not Either"
Use ook (also / too) and its negative counterpart ook niet (also not / not either) to express shared traits or actions.
| My father has an allergy, so my brother is also allergic. | Mijn vader heeft een allergie, dus is mijn broer ook allergisch. |
In Dutch, the placement of ook and ook niet depends on what they refer to.
Before Adjectives and Indefinite Objects
When ook or ook niet focuses on a description or an unspecified thing, place it directly before predicative adjectives and indefinite objects (nouns with een or no article).
| This ingredient is vegan, and the dish is also vegan. | Dit ingrediënt is veganistisch en het gerecht is ook veganistisch. |
| The rash is a symptom, and the itch is also a symptom. | De uitslag is een symptoom, en de jeuk is ook een symptoom. |
| If you are allergic, you must therefore also avoid nuts. | Indien je allergisch bent, moet je dus ook noten vermijden. |
This applies in exactly the same way to the negative ook niet ("also not" / "neither"):
| She had some pain, but the reaction also turns out not to be serious. | Zij had wat pijn, maar de reactie blijkt ook niet ernstig. |
After Definite Objects
When your sentence includes a definite direct object—nouns introduced by de, het, deze, die, or a pronoun like het—the object comes earlier in the sentence. Therefore, ook and ook niet must come after the definite object.
| The man also does not tolerate the lactose. | De man verdraagt de lactose ook niet. |
| I do not recognize that symptom, and she does not recognize it either. | Ik herken dat symptoom niet, en zij herkent het ook niet. |
If there are verbs at the end of the sentence, ook and ook niet sit safely after the definite object but before those final verbs.
| You do not have to eat the gluten, and you do not have to eat the soy either. | Je hoeft de gluten niet te eten, en je hoeft de soja ook niet te eten. |
Focusing on the Action
When ook or ook niet applies to the verb or the whole clause rather than a specific object, it moves to the end of the middle field (just before any final verbs).
| The baby is allergic and is getting more and more of a rash, so he is not sleeping either. | De baby is allergisch en krijgt steeds meer uitslag, dus hij slaapt ook niet. |
| If the rash does not disappear, then the itch does not disappear either. | Verdwijnt de uitslag niet, dan verdwijnt de jeuk ook niet. |
