When managing access (de toegang) to a site (het terrein), rules are often strict. Use behalve to clarify whether the staff (het personeel) or a visitor (de bezoeker) is permitted inside, or to state an exception (de uitzondering).

Mid-Sentence Placement
While a behalve phrase often sits at the end of a sentence, you can also place it directly after the word it modifies. When doing this in the middle of a sentence, set the phrase apart with commas.
For example, when discussing safety (de veiligheid) and mandatory gear like a helmet (de helm):
