Using qua (in terms of)
When discussing specifications or evaluating projects, use the preposition qua ("in terms of" or "regarding") directly in front of a noun to restrict your statement to a specific domain.
| In terms of hardware, this renewed product is significantly better. | Qua hardware is dit vernieuwde product aanzienlijk beter. |
You can also place these phrases in the middle of a sentence:
| Have you checked the hardware in terms of technical specifications? | Hebben jullie de hardware qua technische specificaties gecontroleerd? |
Using -gezien (speaking)
Another way to frame a statement is by placing gezien after an adjective. While literally meaning "viewed," it translates to "-ly speaking" or "from a ... point of view."
| Technically speaking, this project is unfortunately not feasible. | Technisch gezien is dit project helaas niet uitvoerbaar. |
| Commercially speaking, the capacity of the battery is too small. | Commercieel gezien is de capaciteit van de batterij te klein. |
Word order: Inversion
Both qua and -gezien phrases are adverbials. When placed at the beginning of a sentence, they trigger inversion (the verb comes right before the subject).
Notice the inversion in both halves of this sentence:
| In terms of dimensions the room is good, but aesthetically speaking something is missing. | Qua afmetingen is de kamer goed, maar esthetisch gezien ontbreekt er iets. |
