The Suffix -(p)jes
In Dutch, the diminutive isn't only used for making nouns smaller. You can also add -jes (or -pjes) to adjectives and certain time words to transform them into adverbs.
While standard adverbs describe how or when an action happens, the -(p)jes suffix adds a specific feeling. It makes the manner or time feel softer, gentler, friendlier, or more casual.
Doing Things Gently and Quietly
Adverbs ending in -(p)jes are perfect for describing actions done with care or stealth. For example, zacht (soft) becomes zachtjes (quietly or gently), and stil (silent) becomes stilletjes (silently).
Similarly, you can use words like kalmpjes (calmly) or losjes (loosely) to describe a relaxed, gentle approach.
Time and Brief Moments
When attached to time-related words, the suffix makes a duration feel shorter or more casual. You will frequently hear eventjes (for a moment, briefly) and strakjes (shortly, in a little while).
Planning a Stealthy Surprise
Because these adverbs naturally convey a cautious tone, they are extremely useful when planning a surprise or describing subtle actions. Use stiekempjes to do something secretly or flauwtjes for a faint, delicate action.
By combining these adverbs with new vocabulary like verrassen (to surprise) and onopgemerkt (unnoticed), you can describe exactly how your secret preparations must be executed.
