Adverbial diminutives (-(p)jes)

The Suffix -(p)jes

In Dutch, the diminutive isn't only used for making nouns smaller. You can also add -jes (or -pjes) to adjectives and certain time words to transform them into adverbs.

While standard adverbs describe how or when an action happens, the -(p)jes suffix adds a specific feeling. It makes the manner or time feel softer, gentler, friendlier, or more casual.

Doing Things Gently and Quietly

Adverbs ending in -(p)jes are perfect for describing actions done with care or stealth. For example, zacht (soft) becomes zachtjes (quietly or gently), and stil (silent) becomes stilletjes (silently).

We are going to open the door gently.
Wij gaan de deur zachtjes openen.
The children sit silently in the living room.
De kinderen zitten stilletjes in de woonkamer.

Similarly, you can use words like kalmpjes (calmly) or losjes (loosely) to describe a relaxed, gentle approach.

You must hold the thread loosely.
Je moet de draad losjes vasthouden.
He is going to walk calmly to the kitchen.
Hij gaat kalmpjes naar de keuken lopen.

Time and Brief Moments

When attached to time-related words, the suffix makes a duration feel shorter or more casual. You will frequently hear eventjes (for a moment, briefly) and strakjes (shortly, in a little while).

Can you wait briefly outside?
Kun je eventjes buiten wachten?
Shortly, we are going to sing the song.
Strakjes gaan we het lied zingen.

Planning a Stealthy Surprise

Because these adverbs naturally convey a cautious tone, they are extremely useful when planning a surprise or describing subtle actions. Use stiekempjes to do something secretly or flauwtjes for a faint, delicate action.

She is going to secretly bake a cake.
Zij gaat stiekempjes een taart bakken.
She smiles faintly when she sees the gift.
Zij glimlacht flauwtjes als zij het cadeau ziet.

By combining these adverbs with new vocabulary like verrassen (to surprise) and onopgemerkt (unnoticed), you can describe exactly how your secret preparations must be executed.

We are speaking softly, so that we can truly surprise her.
We praten zachtjes, zodat we haar echt kunnen verrassen.
We hide the balloon secretly, so that it remains unnoticed.
Wij verstoppen de ballon stiekempjes, zodat hij onopgemerkt blijft.
