Questions & Answers about Ne vidim dva.
Where is the word for "I" in this sentence?
In Croatian, the verb ending tells you who is doing the action. The word vidim means "I see" all by itself because of its ending. You don't need to add the word ja (I) unless you want to put special emphasis on it.
Why is "do not" translated as just ne?
Croatian doesn't use helper verbs like "do" to make negative sentences. To say you don't do something, you simply put ne directly in front of the verb. So, ne vidim literally translates to "not I-see".
Will the number dva always look exactly like this?
For now, yes! In this lesson, we are learning the numbers exactly as you say them when counting out loud. When used all by themselves to just state a number, they stay in this basic form. Later on, you will learn that numbers one through four can sometimes change their endings when attached to a noun, but you don't need to worry about that yet.
I noticed dva looks and sounds a bit like the English word "two". Is that a coincidence?
It is not a coincidence! English and Croatian both belong to the same large language family, called Indo-European. Because of this shared ancient history, you will often spot basic, everyday words like numbers that look and sound very similar to their English counterparts.
